This Christmas-tree "Michael" photo is edited: what the archived original shows
Short answer: The picture is an edited copy of a photograph of Barack and Michelle Obama in front of a Christmas tree. Full Fact reports that the background was removed and her face and hair were altered. An archived campaign page (saved by the Wayback Machine on 2008-10-17) shows the original, captioned “Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii”; the photo's own date is not stated. The edit shown here is cropped tighter than the original.
The claim
Posts on Facebook show a person with short hair and a white top beside Barack Obama and say the image shows “Michael before he transitioned.” Full Fact (opens in a new tab) checked a Facebook post of this kind and published its verdict on 2025-11-27: False.
Side by side: the edit (2024) and the archived original (page saved 2008)
Our finding: Altered. Snopes says the picture was doctored to give her male features; Full Fact says one version also has the background removed. The copy shown here keeps the tree and curtains, so it is not the background-removed version. The original (page saved 2008) is at right.
Our finding: Same scene as the edit, by our visual comparison: the tree with a star on top, the curtains, his vest and both poses match. The edit is a tighter crop. We compared against a tiny thumbnail, so we rely on Snopes and Full Fact for what exactly was changed.
What the originals say
- The archived campaign page is a gallery of photos from Barack Obama's life; one caption reads "Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii." Our copy is the Wayback Machine snapshot dated 2008-10-17. Wayback snapshot (opens in a new tab)
- Full Fact says the original shows him with her in front of a Christmas tree, and that "according to an archived version of Barack Obama's website, it was taken in Hawaii." Full Fact, 2025-11-27 (opens in a new tab) (secondary)
- Snopes (2024-07-07) says the picture “was doctored to give Michelle male features.” Full Fact says the background has been removed in the Facebook version, her face has been altered and her hair changed, and that the edited image has circulated "since at least 2022," when AFP debunked it; it adds that in earlier versions "the background of the photo was not edited." (secondary)
What we could not confirm
- We opened the archived page. It keeps only a small thumbnail of this photo (101 by 149 pixels), which we show enlarged three times above. At that size the tree with a star on top, the curtains, his vest and both poses match the edited copy, so we treat it as the original; we cannot compare facial features, hair or other fine detail. The caption on the archived page, and Full Fact's note that the original shows a Christmas tree, match what the thumbnail shows.
- We do not know when the photo was taken. The only date we have is the archive snapshot, 2008-10-17, so the original is no later than that. The edited copy was posted in 2024 (Snopes).
- The full-size file is not in the snapshot we found: its address returned "not found." So the description of what was altered rests on Full Fact, not on our own pixel-level comparison.
- We did not read the AFP piece from 2022 that Full Fact refers to. We do not know who first posted the edit; Snopes says it is unclear where the doctored version originated.
- Snopes mentions a Reddit post that claims an unidentified photographer took an undoctored version on Christmas Day, 1991. We could not verify that claim, and we do not rely on it. Snopes (opens in a new tab)
- The circle in the edited picture marks only what the fact-checkers report. We could not identify the exact edit ourselves. The only original we can show is the archived thumbnail, not a full-size scan; its copyright is not ours and we do not claim it is public domain.
What was changed, in plain terms
| Feature | Original (archived thumbnail; page saved 2008) | Edit (posted on X, 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Framing | Wider: the whole tree with its star, the curtains and the room (our observation) | Tighter crop of the same scene, with the tree and curtains still partly visible (our observation) |
| Her face and hair | Her own | Doctored to give male features (per Snopes); hair changed (per Full Fact) |
| Background | A room with a decorated Christmas tree | Kept in this copy; removed in a different, later Facebook version (per Full Fact) |
| Caption | “Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii” | A claim that she is “Michael before he transitioned” |
How the edit spread
- 2008-10-17: The date of the Wayback Machine snapshot that shows the original photo and its caption. The photo was taken or published no later than this; its own date is not stated. Wayback (opens in a new tab)
- 2022: AFP debunks an edited version, according to Full Fact (we did not read the AFP page).
- 2024-07-02: A post on X carries the doctored picture, per Snopes; Snopes publishes its check on 2024-07-07. Snopes (opens in a new tab)

Verified real photographs
These are genuine photographs of Michelle Obama, from public sources, with the date, credit, license and a link to the file. They are all public domain or freely licensed, reduced in size. They are shown so a reader can see what authentic photographs look like across the years; they are not the original of the item on this page unless the caption says so. We looked for childhood and high-school photographs in public sources and did not find any we could verify and legally show; the earliest verified photograph here is from 1985.

How we know
- Find the earliest primary item: the campaign photo page, through the Wayback Machine, with its caption.
- Open the snapshot and read the caption; note that only a thumbnail is preserved, and compare it with the viral copy: tree, curtains, clothing, poses.
- Read Full Fact's check for the description of the edit, and cite it as secondary.
- Date what we can: the snapshot (2008-10-17) and the Full Fact check (2025-11-27).
- State the limit: no pixel-level comparison, because the full-size original is not available to us, and no photo date beyond the archive snapshot.
