The "mother’s will" that leaves everything to "my son Michael" is satire
Short answer: The text first appeared on a website that described itself as satirical, on October 22, 2019. It names the wrong mother and invents a will. Marian Robinson did die, on May 31, 2024, but nobody has produced a will like the one in the text, and the text was written years earlier.
The claim
A screenshot headline, "Michelle Obama’s Mother Dies, Leaves Inheritance to ‘My Son Michael,’" circulates as if it were news. PolitiFact (opens in a new tab) rated an Instagram post of May 7, 2023 Pants on Fire; Lead Stories (opens in a new tab) checked another Instagram post of May 27, 2023.
Side by side: the viral text and the satire label
Our finding: Satire taken as fact. The text came from a site that described itself as satire; it misnames her mother and invents a will (Snopes, PolitiFact, Lead Stories).

About the photograph
What the sources say
- Snopes: "On Oct. 22, 2019, the ObamaWatcher website published an article positing that former first lady Michelle Obama’s mother passed away and left an inheritance to her ‘son’ Michael." Snopes rates it Labeled Satire and says the website describes its output as humorous or satirical; it adds that the article "exploits an unfounded fringe conspiracy theory about the former first lady’s gender identity." Snopes (opens in a new tab)
- Lead Stories: the claim was made on a "now-defunct satirical website," and the Instagram post of May 27, 2023 gave no sign that the material came from a satire site. It notes that her mother’s name is Marian Shields Robinson, not "Mary McGillicuddy Robinson." Lead Stories (opens in a new tab)
- PolitiFact (2023-05-08): the story "originated on a satire site"; her mother is Marian Robinson, not Mary McGillicuddy Robinson; she has a son, Craig, not Michael. PolitiFact (opens in a new tab)
- The text itself contains details no news report would include (for example, that she was "mostly devoured" by a pet). We quote one phrase to show the register; we do not reproduce the article. Snopes quotes it (opens in a new tab)
A real death, and why it does not change the answer
NBC News reported on May 31, 2024 that Marian Robinson had died at 86, citing a family statement. It describes her raising "her daughter and son, Craig Robinson." NBC News (opens in a new tab). When PolitiFact and Lead Stories wrote in 2023, they said she was alive; that was correct then. The satire was published in 2019, long before, and its details (the wrong first name and the invented will) are unrelated to her actual death. A reader who now sees the satire text next to news of her death should know the two are separate. We have not seen her will, nobody has shown us one, and it is a private family matter we do not seek.
What we could not confirm
- We could not open the original ObamaWatcher page (the site is gone, per Lead Stories); we rely on Snopes’s and PolitiFact’s quotations and dates.
- We did not read the AP check (it was blocked to our tools; we saw it only in a search result).
- We have not seen a will for Marian Robinson and do not know of one that is public.

Verified real photographs
These are genuine photographs of Michelle Obama, from public sources, with the date, credit, license and a link to the file. They are all public domain or freely licensed, reduced in size. They are shown so a reader can see what authentic photographs look like across the years; they are not the original of the item on this page unless the caption says so. We looked for childhood and high-school photographs in public sources and did not find any we could verify and legally show; the earliest verified photograph here is from 1985.

How we know
- Find the earliest published version and see what kind of website it came from.
- Read what the fact-checkers say about the site’s own description of itself.
- Compare the text’s facts (mother’s name, her children) with a news report from her family’s statement.
- Check whether a later real event, her death, changes the answer: it does not.
- State the limit: the original page no longer exists.
