No, Obama did not call his wife "Michael": the 2011 ceremony clip in full context
Short answer: No. In the full 2011 remarks, the president is thanking the family of Admiral Mike Mullen, who was leaving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "Michael" is Admiral Mullen's son, Michael Mullen, who was at the ceremony. The official transcript lists the people he names, and none of them is his wife.
The claim
A short video presents the president's words "Admiral Mullen, Deborah, Michael, and I" as him slipping and calling the first lady "Michael." PolitiFact traced a version posted on Facebook on 2023-05-20 (PolitiFact). The earliest copy we found is a 25-second YouTube upload from September 2016, whose title, not the audio, supplies the claim (link for the record).
Watch the original
Watch the original. The Obama White House, "President Obama Welcomes New Joint Chief of Staff Chairman" (2011-09-30, 50 minutes). The sentence starts at about 13:11. The player starts at 13:10.
What was said, in the official transcript
12:50–13:29 (highlight 13:11–13:27) "Secretary Panetta, thank you for your introduction and for your extraordinary leadership. Members of Congress, Vice President Biden, members of the Joint Chiefs, service secretaries, distinguished guests, and men and women of the finest military in the world.
Most of all, Admiral Mullen, Deborah, Michael, and I also want to also acknowledge your son Jack, who's deployed today. All of you have performed extraordinary service to our country.
Before I begin, I want to say a few words about some important news. Earlier this morning, Anwar al-Awlaki..."
Exact seconds, from the same sources: "Most of all" at about 13:11, "Admiral Mullen" at about 13:12, "Deborah" at about 13:14, "Michael" at about 13:16 (our automatic transcript), "your son Jack" at about 13:20.
Who is Michael?
- The ceremony. A "Change of Office" ceremony at Fort Myer, Virginia (the Defense Department story says Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va.), at which Admiral Mullen's four-year term as chairman ended and General Martin Dempsey was sworn in as his successor (the official video shows the oath at about 44:10). White House transcript
- Mullen's wife and sons, named in the same video. Secretary Panetta thanks "Admiral Mullen's family -- his wife, Deborah, his two sons, Jack and Michael" at about 1:04–1:15 (official video captions). Admiral Mullen says "My sons, Jack and Michael" at about 28:34 (same captions). The Defense Department's news service quotes the same line from Mullen: "My sons, Jack and Michael, serve this nation in uniform -- one in naval aviation, the other in surface warfare." American Forces Press Service, via DVIDS (that page is dated 09.29.2011; the White House transcript is dated September 30, 2011, and refers to events "earlier this morning." We could not reconcile the one-day difference; we rely on the White House date.)
- His wife is Deborah. Same DVIDS story: "Deborah, impossible would it be for me to convey to you the depth of my love..." said to his wife at the ceremony. Secondary: PolitiFact.

What the edited version cuts
| Element | Original | Clipped copy |
|---|---|---|
| Where it starts and ends | The president begins speaking at about 12:47 of a 50-minute official video | About 13:04 ('distinguished guests') to about 13:28 ('extraordinary service to our country'), by our alignment of the audio |
| What comes before | The video opens with Secretary Panetta (0:01), who thanks Admiral Mullen's family, naming 'his wife, Deborah, his two sons, Jack and Michael' at about 1:08 | Cut: the first 13 minutes, including that introduction of the Mullen family |
| The sentence itself | 'Most of all, Admiral Mullen, Deborah, Michael, and I also want to also acknowledge your son Jack, who's deployed today.' | Included in the clip, including 'your son Jack' |
| What comes after | Awlaki news, then the praise of Mullen's service; Mullen speaks later and names 'my sons, Jack and Michael' (about 28:34) | Cut |
| The label | Official title: 'President Obama Welcomes New Joint Chief of Staff Chairman' | Title: 'Obama calls Michelle (Michael)'. The title, not the audio, makes the claim |
Plain-language explanation
At a ceremony for a departing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the president thanked the admiral's family from the podium. He named the admiral, the admiral's wife Deborah, and their son Michael, then added their other son Jack, who was deployed. A viewer who does not know the admiral's sons are named Jack and Michael can hear "Michael" and assume it is a mistake. The clip's title tells them what to assume.

How we know
- Pull the White House transcript and read the full sentence around the clipped words.
- Find the official video; confirm the channel, upload date and that the transcript and the audio match (captions at 13:11, our own automatic transcription, same words; a person then listened and confirmed).
- Identify who is named: the same video has Panetta and Mullen naming Deborah, Jack and Michael; the Defense Department news story quotes Mullen the same way.
- Find the earliest clipped copy we can verify and compare it with the original: the audio is the same sentence, trimmed; the title supplies the claim.
- State the limits: a person listened to the passage and the timestamp (2026-10-26), but we did no audio forensics, and we could not obtain an archive snapshot of the clipped copy.
