FAQ · Updated 2026-10-26

Frequently asked questions

Short answer to the main one: No, the claims that circulate about Michelle Obama's identity are not supported by any original source we could find.

Is Michelle Obama a man?

No. The White House biography, Princeton University Archives records and NBC's 2024 obituary of her mother all describe a woman, born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, with a brother, Craig. See the full review. We found no original source for the claim.

Did Barack Obama call her "Michael" on video?

No. In 2011 he thanked the family of Admiral Mike Mullen by name (2011 clip), and in 2015 he read aloud a letter from a woman who wrote about her own husband Michael (2015 clip). Both are cut from longer recordings with official transcripts.

Is the old photo of the two of them proof?

No. It is an edited version of a photograph Barack Obama posted on 2019-01-17. See the original and the edit.

What about Joan Rivers's remark?

CNN reported in July 2014 that she made a joke about the Obamas, and quoted her saying "I think it's a compliment." A comedian's remark is not evidence about anyone's records. CNN (Wayback) · Hollywood Reporter

Did her necklace spell "MIKE" at the 2020 convention?

Does Alexa say she was born a man?
