The Obama family photo shared as "Epstein island" was edited: a building was added
Short answer: AFP reports that a Facebook post of 2023-12-06 showed an edited version of a family photo that Michelle Obama had posted on Instagram on 2020-08-04. A striped building was added at the left edge. The unedited photo shows a rocky shoreline and the ocean, and fact-checkers placed it at Lanai Lookout on Oahu, Hawaii.
The claim
A Facebook post dated 2023-12-06, with the caption "Outta all the places to take a family photo" (as AFP quotes it), showed a photograph of the Obama family on a rocky shore with a building behind them, and presented it as having been taken on what it called "Epstein island." AFP reports that the post had been shared more than 1,000 times. AFP fact check, 2023-12-14 (opens in a new tab) (secondary). This is a different kind of case from our flagship review: it is another falsely promoted image, not the "Michael" claim.
Side by side: the edited image (faces blurred by us), and the place
Our finding: Altered. A striped building was added at the left edge (AFP, Lead Stories). The yellow circle marks it.
Our finding: Context only. The unedited photo has no building on the shore (AFP, Lead Stories).
What the sources say
- AFP (Nahiara S. Alonso, AFP USA; translation and adaptation Bill McCarthy; published 2023-12-14, updated 2026-02-18 "to add metadata"; read in full on 2026-10-26): the photo "was altered from a family picture taken in Oahu, Hawaii to add a building connected to the disgraced American financier." A reverse image search shows Michelle Obama posted the original on Instagram and other platforms on 2020-08-04, her husband’s birthday, and the building "does not appear in the genuine picture." AFP says similar posts "have spread for years" on Facebook, TikTok and X, some with a screenshot of a June 2020 article from the Argentine newspaper Clarín about Epstein’s island. Her posts do not say where the photo was taken; further reverse searches surfaced tourism pages for Oahu, specifically Lānaʻi Lookout and Kahauloa Cove, and AFP says Google Maps Street View and Google Earth imagery matches details in the portrait. AFP contacted Obama’s office and got no response. AFP (opens in a new tab) (secondary). We do not host AFP’s images; the copy on this page comes from Lead Stories.
- The original post: Today reported on 2020-08-04 that she shared a throwback family photo for her husband’s birthday with the caption "Happy birthday to my favorite guy. Here’s to all the good days, blue skies, and new adventures to come." Today, 2020-08-04 (opens in a new tab) · the Instagram post itself (opens in a new tab). We opened the Instagram post on 2026-10-26: its page data gives a posting time of 2020-08-04 13:08 UTC (6:08 AM Pacific) and the same caption. We link it and did not archive it. USA Today says the same photo and words were posted on X that day (X post (opens in a new tab)); decoding that post’s number by the standard rule gives 13:01 UTC (6:01 AM Pacific), our own arithmetic.
- Lead Stories: the photo was not taken at "Epstein island," and the striped building was added. Lead Stories, 2023-12 (opens in a new tab) (secondary)
- Newtral (Spain, 2023-12-07) matched the scenery to Lanai Lookout on Oahu using Google Earth. Newtral (opens in a new tab) (secondary)
- USA Today (Nate Trela, Dec. 15, 2023, 4:27 p.m. ET; rating "Altered"): "The blue and white striped building was edited into the image." It says unaltered versions were posted on Instagram and X by Michelle Obama on Aug. 4, 2020, with the words "Happy birthday to my favorite guy" in both, that the Facebook post of Dec. 6 was shared more than 1,000 times in a week, and that Lead Stories, Check Your Fact and Reuters also debunked the claim. USA Today (opens in a new tab) (secondary; read in full on 2026-10-26)
- An earlier copy: Reuters (By Reuters Fact Check, June 9, 2021, 9:30 AM PDT; verdict "False") reported on an altered version posted to Instagram "in mid-May" 2021 in "an undisclosed coastal location," with the blue and white striped building at the top left. It says the original was posted by Michelle Obama in August 2020 for her husband’s 59th birthday and that there is "no sign of the blue and white striped building." So the edit is older than the 2023 post. Reuters, 2021-06-09 (opens in a new tab) (secondary; read in full on 2026-10-26)
What we could not confirm
- We opened the Instagram post on 2026-10-26 (time and caption above); we link it and did not archive it. We have not compared the edited image with it pixel by pixel, and rely on AFP and Lead Stories for what was changed.
- Reuters’s 2021 copy and AFP’s 2023 copy are both described as the family photo with the striped building added at the top left; we have not compared the two copies with each other, so we do not say they are the same file.
- We cannot say who added the building. We have not named the page that posted the image, and we have not checked whether the post is still online.
- The right-hand photo on this page is a different photograph of the same place. It is context, not the original.

Verified real photographs
These are genuine photographs of Michelle Obama, from public sources, with the date, credit, license and a link to the file. They are all public domain or freely licensed, reduced in size. They are shown so a reader can see what authentic photographs look like across the years; they are not the original of the item on this page unless the caption says so. We looked for childhood and high-school photographs in public sources and did not find any we could verify and legally show; the earliest verified photograph here is from 1985.

How we know
- Find the post and note its date (AFP: 2023-12-06).
- Find the original: the photo Michelle Obama posted on Instagram on 2020-08-04.
- Read what the fact-checkers say was added, and check it against a second one (Lead Stories).
- Check the location claim independently: Newtral’s geolocation to Lanai Lookout.
- Read the 2021 Reuters check and the AFP and USA Today checks of 2023 in full; they show the edit predates the 2023 post. State the limits: we did not archive the Instagram post or compare pixels.
